On Thursday March 21st, 24 transition year students from Errigal College stepped into the shoes of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) as they participated in the Euroscola
competition held in Strasbourg, France. Having clinched victory in the Midlands-North-West
constituency competition late last year, these students earned the amazing opportunity to
represent Ireland and engage in the intricate workings of European politics.
The Euroscola experience offered a unique platform for these young minds to immerse
themselves in workshops and discussions on crucial topics such as Gender Equality and
European Elections. Interacting with peers from 26 other countries, the students exchanged
perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of the European Union.
Reflecting on the enriching experience, Ms. Deirdre Markham, Deputy Principal of Errigal
College, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments: “It’s truly inspiring to witness our
students embrace the complexities of European politics with such enthusiasm and intellect.
The Euroscola competition provided a valuable opportunity for them to broaden their
horizons and develop a deeper appreciation for the democratic processes that shape our
continent.”
Accompanying the students on this transformative journey were Mr. Evan Gorrell, Business
Teacher and School Tour Coordinator, along with Ms. Deirdre Markham and Ms. Caitriona
Hasson. Mr. Gorrell shared his insights, stating, “Watching our students engage
passionately in discussions, tackle challenges, and collaborate with peers from different
countries and prospectives has been incredibly rewarding. This experience goes beyond the
classroom, empowering them to become informed citizens.”
Beyond the realm of politics, the students savoured the cultural delights of Strasbourg,
embarking on a scenic boat tour along the picturesque river Ill, unravelling mysteries at a
local escape room, and unwinding with a cinematic experience.
